Haven’t We Been Through This?

Kelly Ripa would like you to know that if you (you being a gentleman) do not pay for your lady, she will think you’re “gross” and “disgusting”. I’m not going to wax on and on about how preposterous this is because:

a) You already read my thoughts on paying for dates here. And if you have any doubts about my position, the article was called “Splitting the Check-Yes Please!”

b) You read the follow-up to the Splitting the Check piece in which Hugo Schwyzer and I continued the debate.

c) Jezebel pretty much already has it covered in their coverage.

However, I will add one thing. Everyone is entitled to their views, even Kelly Ripa. And while I disagree with them, people who believe men should pay on first dates are not crazy or stupid. What’s particularly annoying is Ripa’s obvious belief that this is a no-brainer, and that people who disagree with her either don’t exist, or are nuts. When Regis counters, Kelly responds about all women, “I’m sure they do NOT want to pick up the check, because they think chivalry is dead already.” Her audience seems to agree with her. Can we at least acknowledge that there are alternatives?
