Look Book

As far as internet rabbit holes go, the Michelle Obama Look Book at New York Magazine is one I don’t mind diving into every now and then. NYMag has kept track of the First Lady’s outfits in yearly albums and I tripped into the 2011 book yesterday and seemingly couldn’t stop until I had perused all 184 pictures.

Come on, look at her:

I’m not sure why I’m so obsessed. Obviously, she’s beautiful, and obviously, she has great taste in clothes, but there’s something else going on. There are lots of beautiful women in beautiful clothes and I spend a decent portion of my internet time looking at them on sites like Jezebel’s Good/Bad/Ugly or Go Fug Yourself. None of them, however, do I find as inspiring as the First Lady.

In many ways, Michelle Obama has the same resources to looking fabulous that the Hollywood A-List does. But I while I think that most celebrities look a hot mess when they’re not aided by a phalanx of helpers, I really do think Michelle Obama’s glamour and poise come from within. Goddamn that sounded cheesy, but I’m willing to bet you know what I mean. I have a sneaking suspicion that back when she was a young lawyer at Sidley Austin in Chicago, she was the woman who every other woman identified as the most stylish in the office.

Let’s not pretend there’s not a lot of money involved in dressing Michelle Obama, but that’s obviously not the root of her fashion sense. Here she is wearing a J. Crew sweater that I’m 98% sure I’ve tried on:

I’m trying to remember why I didn’t buy it. Sigh. Oh well, at least I’m wearing sweat pants with only two holes in them (win!) today, and there’s tiramisu cake in the fridge for breakfast (double win!)

  1. She does just seem to have a natural grace, a sense of ease, about her, doesn’t she?
