Sunday Scraps 46

1. DISNEY: The most epic Disney a capella medley ever. Costume changes included. Prepare yourself, it’s seven minutes long.

2. TAPE: Artist Max Zorn uses only brown packing tape and a scalpel to make these images.

3. TECH: Geek out with me over this sweet graph tracking browser usage. Watch the life and death of AOL, the rise of Mozilla, and ridiculous longevity of Internet Explorer.

4. SAVAGE: Dan Savage + Ira Glass. Done and done.

5. WHALES: Salon has a fascinating look at the history and veracity of the man-in-whale folklore. Is it possible to come out the other side, as so many myths would suggest?

6. CHOICE: Really excellent essay about why pro-life advocate John Saveland supports Planned Parenthood. Imagine how much further this conversation could go if everyone employed such rationality and logic!

Sunday Scraps 17

1.BODY/MEDICINE: The American Medical Association is officially putting photoshop on the shit list, “We must stop exposing impressionable children and teenagers to advertisements portraying models with body types only attainable with the help of photo editing software.”

2. MONOGAMY: Dan Savage and his controversial (but refreshingly rational) views on monogamy are profiled by Mark Oppenheimer for the New York Times.

3. WORDS: Katie “Jordan” Price is a British tabloid star (think Paris Hilton with giant boobs). This letter she wrote about her disabled son is powerful, eloquent, and totally surprising. Color me embarrassed for judging the book by its silicone cover.

4. GAY/MONEY: Slate‘s June Thomas profiles the interesting economic challenges of running a gay bar. How do you run a business when you cater to only 10% of the population?

5. WORK: Mike Rowe hosts “Dirty Jobs,” that show about farmers castrating pigs and oil rig employees. His TED Talk about his changing views on the nature of “work” is really good (and not only because he’s damn sexy).

6. TRAUMA: The internet went a bit bonkers this week over Mac Mclelland’s explosive personal essay, “How Violent Sex Helped Ease my PTSD,” about her experiences reporting from Haiti and overcoming the subsequent trauma. Other journalists called foul, accusing McClelland of narcissism and trivializing the real victims. This letter against the piece was signed by a laundry list of activists and writers, including Haitian writer Edwidge Danticat.

Related Post: Last Sunday, we talked about favorite lesbians, two Jo(h)ns, and the negotiating table.

Related Post: The Sunday before included gender in comic books, “Fat,” and raunchy language on the baseball diamond.

Sunday Scraps 9

1. WIN: Fey +Poehler + Jersey Shore. Ahem, that’s Jersey Floor, a sketch on Jimmy Fallon in which an elevator button gives everyone the poof, a leathery tan and Jimmy Fallon an inexplicable Boston accent.

2. TWEET: Flowing Data tracks the record-breakng tweets per second as Sunday night’s Bin Laden announcement progressed.

3. PLAYBOY: The Hairpin has a 1968 Playboy Club handbook for all the bunnies.  How many demerits for incorrectly bent bunny ears?

4. GAY MARRIAGE/IMMIGRATION: The deportation of a Venezuelan man who is legally married (in CT) to an American man was delayed. NYT says “sign that the Obama administration is exploring legal avenues for recognizing same sex couples in immigration cases.”

5. VINTAGE: Another excellent gallery of sexist vintage ads. Women belong in the kitchen, don’t you know, and they’re dumb!

6. GOOGLE: The latest Google Chrome ads are sooo good, but this one, featuring Dan Savage and the advent of the It Gets Better Project, takes the cake.

Related Post: Sunday eight, seven, and six.
