Maptastic for Your Weekend

You know how I feel about maps. Here are three fun map-related things people have sent me this week.

1. Neighborhood Branding: Apparently, an artist has taken it upon him or herself to brand Chicago neighborhoods with appropriate typography.

2. The CTA vs. NYC: From Transit Maps, if you flip and rotate the CTA train map and lay it across Manhattan, eh… it kinda fits?

3. Demographics! If you want to get real fancy, spend some time with these population maps from Straight Dope Chicago. They track population movement by wealth and race from 1980 to 2009. See that little rich, white bubble that looks so out of place on the South Side? Oh heyyyyy, Hyde Park!

P.S. It’s January in Chicago, so I’m doing the smart thing and leaving. I’m going to LA for a few days to remind myself what 75 degrees feels like, so I’ll shall be MIA for the weekend.

Sunday (Tuesday) Scraps 42

1. RILEY: Arguably my favorite YouTube video ever. This is Riley, and she has some very strong opinions about gendered marketing in the toy aisle.

2. PENELOPE: You might be familiar with Penelope Trunk’s ubiquitous advice giving. This week, we saw a whole different, and frankly disturbing, side. On her personal blog, Trunk wrote about temporarily leaving her abusive husband.

3. TASKS: TaskRabbit is the new start-up darling (or so people say), and NYMag put the service-based site to the test. How much would you pay a stranger to install your printer?

4. HOLY TOYS: Super fascinating piece from Allison Yarrow at the Daily Beast on several new sex toy companies that exclusively target religious consumers. Christian, Jewish, and Muslim entrepreneurs have all gotten in on the sex toy game. Apparently, sex toys aren’t just for heathens!

5. LOGO: Honest Logos, a flickr stream from Hertz, recreates and rechristens the most iconic logos. It’s a nifty trick, and the YouTube copycat might be my fave.

6. TWILIGHT: What if Herman Melville had written Twilight? Virginia Woolf? iO9 takes a fun hypothetical trip into literary fantasy land.

Sunday Scraps Week 5

1. ART/VERTISING: What happens when you strip the words from the most iconic brand symbols? You’re left with some pretty awesme pop-art. How many of the wordless logos can you identify?

2. SPORTS: Funny how Yahoo thinks that the UCONN ladies basketball team is most excited about watching their men’s team… instead of, oh, I don’t know… playing in their own NCAA tournament?

3. POLITICS/BIDEN: The VP voices some much needed support for “No Means No” and makes the excellent point that “No means no, if you’re drunk or sober. No means no if you’re in bed in a dorm, or on the street. No means no even if you said yes at first or changed your mind.” Articulate reminders about the scope and variety of sexual assault are always needed. Remember Kathleen Mayer’s awesome Dartmouth piece?

4. TV: This someecard cracks me up. Man, we Wire devotees must be obnoxious as hell. Apologies! (But seriously, watch it, it’s the shit).

5. HOLLYWOOD: Anna Faris is too cool for school. She calls 1-800 ‘How Am I Driving’ members to praise truckers. More fun facts from NYMag.

6. BOOKS: Who doesn’t fantasize about meeting your soulmate in a bookstore?
